MetaFungal at "A Toast to Science!": Exploring the Hidden World of Yeasts

On February 15, 2025, MetaFungal researcher Cláudia Barata was invited to the science communication event “A Toast to Science!” at the Urban Ecological Park of Viana do Castelo. In her talk, she explored both the dark and the bright sides of yeasts - from their potential to cause infections to their vital roles in biotechnology. Events like this reinforce MetaFungal’s mission to bring cutting-edge science closer to society, sparking curiosity and promoting informed discussions about emerging fungal threats and opportunities.

MetaFungal in Focus: From Research to Clinical Application

On September 27, 2024, at the Hospital of Braga, Patrícia Ataíde presented her PhD work plan and the MetaFungal Project during the Meeting on Translational Science between Clinical Practice and Fundamental Research in Fungal Infections. The event brought together researchers and medical doctors, aiming to bridge fundamental research and clinical practice in the field of fungal infections.

This participation was crucial to fulfilling the project’s mission of ​aligning our research with real-world clinical scenarios. 

MetaFungal at NEI 2024 in Braga: Inspiring Young Minds!

The 2024 edition of European Research Night (NEI) in Braga was packed with exciting scientific activities for curious young minds  and MetaFungal was proud to be part of it! Our team hosted the activity "Emerging Fungal Infections and Global Warming", sparking interest and curiosity among children and families. Explaining our research to such a diverse audience was both a challenge and a joy! It was incredibly rewarding to see so many people engaged and eager to learn more about the hidden world of fungi.

MetaFungal Team at the XXII Jornadas de Biologia de Leveduras

The MetaFungal project team participated actively in the 22nd Jornadas de Biologia de Leveduras Professor Nicolau van Uden, held on September 20–21, 2024, at Hotel Termas da Curia. Representing the project, the team delivered four oral presentations, showcasing recent advances and findings in the field of yeast biology and membrane dynamics.

This participation highlights the project's scientific contribution and ongoing engagement with the broader research community dedicated to yeast.

Fungal Infection Challenges

The MetaFungal Interface Science Workshop: Global Challenges in Fungal Infections, held at the University of Minho in 2024, gathered international researchers, clinicians, and public health experts. The event also included a roundtable discussion with the participation of TecMinho, the university’s innovation and interface unit. This workshop served as a vital forum for knowledge exchange, collaboration and strategic planning for the future of fungal infection control.

From Braga to the World: MetaFungal fuels International Research Experience

In 2023 and 2024, the University of Minho hosted the 1st and 2nd Editions of the Global Mobility Forum, themed “International Experiences from the UMinho Community.” Two members of the MetaFungal group, Faezeh Ghasemi (2023) and Patrícia Ataíde (2024) were kindly invited to present their Erasmus mobility experience during their master’s thesis. They emphasized how the MetaFungal project provided them the opportunity to engage in cutting-edge scientific research, while networking with leading experts, and gaining valuable insights that have enriched the Project's ongoing research.

Where Ambition Meets Innovation: MetaFungal at the Unlimited Future Fair

In 2023, the University of Minho hosted the Unlimited Future – Master’s and Postgraduate Fair, one of Portugal’s largest national events dedicated to advanced academic studies. This event  gathered students, graduates, and professionals eager to explore the next step in their educational and professional development.  In an era where higher education is becoming increasingly competitive and specialized, the presence of the MetaFungal team at the event was crucial in showcasing the innovative work currently being done in fungal biology, helping to inspire future researchers and highlight the relevance of this growing field!

The MetaFungal project presents the 1st Edition of the CellMed meeting

The MetaFungal Team organized in 2023, for the first time in Braga, the CellMed meeting: “Meeting in Cellular Membrane Dynamics.” Hosted at the INL (International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory), this event explored a wide range of topics—from membrane trafficking and lipid homeostasis to advanced imaging techniques such as super-resolution microscopy and cryo-electron microscopy. The meeting welcomed numerous invited speakers from leading institutions around the globe. Thanks to their contributions, the support of the Organizing Committee and all Funding Agencies, the event was a great success.

The MetaFungal Team at NEI 2022: Fungi in Focus

The 2022 edition of European Research Night (NEI) in Braga included around 50 activities focused on the theme "Science for All, Sustainability, and Inclusion", aligned with the European Green Deal. Our team hosted the activity "Pathogenic Microorganisms and Nutrition", fostering curiosity and fascination among children and families. Sharing our research with such a varied group was an exciting experience! We are grateful to everyone who stopped by our stand and to NEI for hosting another memorable evening full of science and discovery!

Celebrating Science at NEI 2021

The MetaFungal Team was kindly invited to be present at the 2021 edition of European Research Night (NEI) in Braga, focusing on the theme "Science for Climate Action".
